Position: Assistant Recreation Specialist II – Site Supervisor
(Seasonal/Part-time)

Rate of Pay: $20.00/hr

Nature of Work:
The employee will be under general supervision of Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation program staff and the department director.

This employee will assist in the planning, budget reporting, scheduling, and implementation of the City of Hattiesburg summer day camp program. He or she will supervise staff and instructors at designated locations while implementing day-to-day operations and lesson plans as needed, assist day camp staff with keeping activities organized, efficient and on schedule and maintain camp location safety at all times.

Employee will plan and lead children’s activities as needed, including but not limited to, sports, games, arts and crafts, music and field trips. He or she will schedule and hold conferences, with support from the department director, with parents as needed, in person.

An employee of this class handles the routine operational aspects of summer day camp by preparing and verifying payroll of staff, maintaining designated operational budget for events, supplies and necessary food or equipment. Employee may be asked to work at parks, and similar public facilities. General instructions are received from the director of Parks and Recreation, who reviews the work.

Illustrative Examples of Work:
• Manages the continuous programs and activities of the day camp program at assigned locations and explain rules and regulations for use of facilities and equipment
• Supervises summer staff that includes, but is not limited to, day camp counselors, teenage volunteer interns, and visiting instructors
• Implements lesson plans as needed and assist day camp staff with keeping activities on schedule
• Plans and leads children’s activities as needed, including but not limited to, sports, games, arts and crafts, music, and field trips
• Keeps attendance records and activity lesson plans
• Conducts and supervises programs and activities on, and away from, site location
• Supervises large numbers of children both visually and audibly to ensure health/safety standards
• Communicates courteously, effectively and professionally when providing instruction, direction or written and verbal discussions with employees, citizens, parents, program visitors and children
• Practices continuous public relations in dealing with the public
• Works respectively, efficiently and effectively with parents
• Works outdoors in extreme heat and fluctuating environments
• Makes effective quick decisions
• Implements appropriate discipline procedures
• Conducts and attends staff meetings as required
• Reports accidents or injuries occurring on public facilities to supervisor
• Open and lock doors at facilities as needed; assists in the general upkeep and orderliness of the facilities
• Performs related work as required

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
Significant experience as an instructor or leader in the above designated activities with preferred experience in a childcare or youth program setting.

Employee must:
• Have reliable driver’s license
• Be twenty-one (21) years of age or older
• Maintain a level of respect, professionalism and enthusiasm supportive of the City of Hattiesburg Employee Handbook
• Be able to perform and/or instruct recreational activities including, but not limited to, sports, arts and crafts, music, exercise, science and education
• Be able to swim
• Have a cell phone and email address for communication
• Overall understanding of safety rules and regulations
• Preference given to applicants that are CPR or First-Aid Certified
• Have significant knowledge and experience with recreational and instructional programming
• 2 years’ experience in education or child care field
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Strong organizational skills
• Be able to adapt quickly and easily to change or direction
• Ability to participate in all activities for which hired
