Hattiesburg, Mississippi – On Saturday, March 5, the City of Hattiesburg will enter into Phase 3 of construction for the Downtown Hattiesburg Roundabout, which will include a modified way of traveling through the intersection at Hardy Street, Green Street, 2nd Avenue and Adeline Street.
To keep traffic moving, drivers will navigate the roundabout as it is constructed – but with temporary stop signs that will help keep motorists and crews safe in the construction zone.
As motorists approach the intersection, they must:
- Come to a complete stop at the stop sign.
- Yield to any vehicle already in the intersection upon arrival. They have the right of way.
- Once the way is clear, merge carefully into the circle.
Additionally, motorists should only enter and exit the circle by traveling toward the right. There is signage around the circle to indicate the direction of travel.
“Roundabouts are proven to alleviate the number of conflict points while also improving traffic flow – two things that have been trouble spots for this particular intersection for a very long time,” said Mayor Toby Barker. “We know it’s going to take some time to learn how to navigate this area, and we feel this third phase will be a good training ground for those who have never traveled through a traffic circle before. We ask everyone for patience and that they come to a complete stop before carefully merging right into the circle.”
Phase 3 is expected to take approximately six weeks, pending weather. Crews will use this phase to finish the construction of the circle structure and complete necessary curb work that will slow motorists as they enter the roundabout.
At the end of Phase 3, the temporary stop signs will be removed and the rules of the road for roundabout travel will be in place. Adeline Street will remain closed throughout the duration of Phases 3 and 4.
This project is progressing on schedule is anticipated to be complete by early summer, dependent on the weather.
