Truck Route
Proposed Truck Route Ordinance Amendments
The City of Hattiesburg is considering proposed amendments to its truck route ordinance.
The ordinance helps determine where large commercial trucks may travel within the city. The proposed updates are intended to clarify the rules, identify approved truck routes, reduce unnecessary truck traffic through neighborhoods and residential streets and provide clearer guidance for enforcement.
These proposed amendments do not ban commercial deliveries, service calls or necessary truck access. Instead, they are designed to keep large truck traffic on approved routes whenever possible while still allowing trucks to reach specific homes, businesses, job sites and permitted destinations when needed.
What the proposed amendments address
The proposed updates include information about:
- Which vehicles are considered commercial trucks
- Which vehicles are exempt from the ordinance
- How local deliveries, pickups and service calls would be handled
- Which roads are proposed as designated truck routes
- Which roads would no longer be designated truck routes
- How special permits would work
- How state oversize or overweight permits interact with city truck route rules
- What penalties may apply for violations
