Hattiesburg, Mississippi – On Monday, May 13, 2024, Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker announced a significant grant from the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund (MOSTF) for $2,246,419 to continue the ambitious development of Gordon’s Creek into a key landmark for eco-tourism. This project enters its next phase with a total project budget of $3,046,419.
This phase of the Gordon’s Creek project is located between Bushman Street and the Leaf River. It will significantly expand and enhance the local recreational infrastructure. Planned developments include an 8-foot pathway and pedestrian bridge accommodating pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users that will connect the Gordon’s Creek Linear Trail, Longleaf Trace, Leaf River, and Chain Park.
Barker said this grant, the largest MOSTF award this spring, will advance the city’s mission to make more outdoor recreational amenities available to the public.
“Our waterways and trails have often been overlooked in their potential to create more eco-tourism and improve community well-being,” said Barker. “This grant furthers the work in realizing the untapped potential of both Gordon’s Creek and the Leaf River.”
The initiative also includes the construction of an outdoor classroom and an overlook across the Leaf River, aimed at boosting educational opportunities and wildlife observation. The expected increase in community engagement and economic activity from these enhancements will make the area a more attractive for residents and visitors.
Barker added, “This development will forge a deeper connection with nature and provide educational benefits that are vital for community development. It’s about creating spaces that educate, entertain and inspire.”
With receipt of the grant recently approved by the Hattiesburg City Council, the design phase of the project will begin in late 2024. The city’s local match will be budgeted from 1% sales tax revenue and leftover general funds.
This project is Hattiesburg’s second award through MOSTF, the first being the Sims Road River Access Project announced in the fall of 2023.
