May 22 – Daily Update

Today’s update includes several notes for you going into the weekend regarding mask distribution, the Hattiesburg Way Forward – a resource guide to reopening businesses safely, Gov. Reeves’ latest orders, new openings on Tuesday and a note about Memorial Day.

Mask Distribution
On Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, masks can be picked up at the Forrest County EOC from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The address is 4080 US Hwy 11 Hattiesburg next to Sully’s Restaurant.

Additional locations for Saturday, May 23 – 8 a.m. until Noon, include:

The Hattiesburg Way Forward
Through collaboration (and with much thanks to the Area Development Partnership), a resource guide for reopening safely amid COVID-19 has been compiled for business and organizational use.

The document lists best practices regarding:
– Protecting employees and customers
– Cleaning, disinfecting, hygiene and sanitization
– Communicating with staff and the public
– Screening of employees
– Personal protective equipment
– Paid leave guidelines in federal law
– Industry-specific COVID-19 resources

Governor Reeves’ Executive Orders 1487 & 1488
▪️ Opens outdoor recreation and amusement (playgrounds, water parks, etc.) at 50% capacity.
▪️ Opens school sports practices, weight rooms and training facilities.
▪️ Extends other elements of the Safer-at-Home order until June 1, this includes that indoor amusement and recreation remain closed, per Governor Reeves’ order.

New Openings May 26
▪️ Turtle Creek Mall
▪️ Massage therapy will open in some capacity
▪️ Expand capacity in salons and barbershops
▪️ Relax mask requirements for working out in gyms

Executive Order 2020-9 with these openings and guidelines will be issued over the weekend.

Memorial Day
In lieu of the typical Memorial Day Ceremony, the Veterans Committee of Hattiesburg will host a virtual reading of names to honor the 173 individuals from Hattiesburg who died while serving in the U.S. military.

It will be streamed here and broadcast on WFOR 92.7 FM and 1400 AM.
