Summer Camp Teacher
Rate of Pay: $18.00
NATURE OF WORK
The Summer Camp Teacher plays a key leadership role in the City of Hattiesburg’s summer day camp program, leading camp counselors and ensuring a safe, structured, and engaging environment for all participants. Under the supervision of the Camp Site Supervisor, the Summer Camp Teacher is responsible for overseeing daily activities, mentoring counselors, enforcing policies, and actively participating in hands-on programming.
This role requires a high level of professionalism, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to creating a positive experience for both campers and staff. The Summer Camp Teacher must lead by example, demonstrating appropriate behavior, staying off personal phones during work hours, and dressing professionally at all times.
This position involves working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and requires active participation in sports, arts and crafts, music, games, and educational activities. The Summer Camp Teacher will also communicate with parents, assist with scheduling, and support the Camp Site Supervisor in maintaining discipline, organization, and adherence to policies and procedures.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
• Lead and mentor camp counselors, ensuring they adhere to policies, maintain professionalism, and actively engage with campers.
• Assist in implementing and leading structured daily activities, including sports, games, arts and crafts, music, and field trips.
• Actively participate alongside campers and staff in all activities, setting a professional example.
• Enforce rules and expectations for campers and counselors, maintaining a safe and structured environment.
• Supervise large groups of children both visually and audibly to ensure health and safety standards are met.
• Assist the Camp Site Supervisor with daily operations, scheduling, and problem-solving.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with parents, providing updates and addressing concerns as needed.
• Ensure that camp counselors remain engaged, professional, and accountable in their roles.
• Support the Camp Site Supervisor with tracking attendance, lesson planning, and reporting incidents or concerns.
• Work outdoors in extreme heat and fluctuating environments as part of daily responsibilities.
• Assist in opening, closing, and maintaining the organization and cleanliness of camp facilities.
• Attend all required staff meetings and training sessions.
• Report accidents, injuries, or behavioral concerns to the Camp Site Supervisor immediately.
• Perform additional related duties as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Experience leading youth programs or working in an educational or recreational setting.
• Ability to effectively lead and support a team of camp counselors, holding them accountable for professionalism and adherence to policies.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, respect, and enthusiasm in alignment with the City of Hattiesburg Employee Handbook.
• Reliable transportation to and from the camp location.
• 20 years of age or older.
• Ability to swim and assist in water-based activities if required.
• Must have a cell phone and email address for work-related communication.
• Strong understanding of safety rules and regulations.
• CPR or First Aid certification preferred but not required.
• Experience working with children or in a childcare/educational role preferred.
• Ability to adapt quickly to changes and maintain flexibility in a dynamic work environment.
