Position: Recreation Specialist II / Summer Camp Site Supervisor
Department: Parks & Recreation

Rate of Pay: $20.00

Nature of Work:
The Summer Camp Site Supervisor works under the general supervision of Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation program staff and the department Director.
The Site Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of an assigned summer camp location and supervising camp counselors and staff. This position requires strong leadership, organization, and the ability to manage large groups of children while maintaining a safe and structured camp environment.
Supervisors are responsible for ensuring camp activities run smoothly, schedules are followed, and safety procedures are enforced.
Camp operations often involve long days and outdoor work in extreme heat or changing environmental conditions.

Examples of Work:
• Oversee daily camp operations at assigned camp location
• Supervise camp counselors, volunteer interns, and visiting instructors
• Ensure staff maintain proper supervision of campers at all times
• Implement and assist with activity planning including sports, games, arts and crafts, music, and field trips
• Maintain daily attendance and activity records
• Ensure camp activities remain organized and on schedule
• Communicate with parents regarding camper concerns when necessary
• Conduct staff meetings and provide leadership and direction to counselors
• Report accidents or injuries occurring during camp activities
• Ensure camp facilities remain safe, organized, and properly maintained
• Assist with payroll verification and operational reporting as required
• Work outdoors in extreme heat and changing environmental conditions
• Perform related duties as required

Leadership Expectations:
Site Supervisors are responsible for maintaining a professional, organized, and supportive camp environment.
Supervisors must:
• Provide leadership and direction to camp counselors
• Model professionalism and positive behavior
• Demonstrate patience when working with children and staff
• Promote strong teamwork among camp staff
• Make quick and effective decisions to maintain safety and order
• Ensure that staff remain attentive and actively engaged with campers at all times

Cell Phone Policy:
Cell phones are required for communication purposes; however, phones are not permitted for personal use during camp hours. Phones may only be used for emergency or work-related communication.

Site Supervisors are responsible for ensuring this policy is followed by all camp staff.

Qualifications:
• Must be twenty-three (23) years of age or older
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Experience working with children or youth programs
• Ability to swim
• Strong leadership and organizational skills
• Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations
• CPR or First Aid Certification preferred but not required
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Minimum two (2) years’ experience in education, childcare, or youth programming preferred
