Position: Equipment Operator
Department: Parks & Recreation
Division: Cemetery

Rate of Pay: $17.00/hr.

Nature of Work:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work involving equipment operation and maintenance of City cemeteries and other Recreation Department/City facilities. This position requires significant outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, and other severe weather events.

Examples of Work:
• Perform daily cemetery operations including operating backhoes and other heavy equipment, hauling dirt, mowing, weed eating, grave maintenance, and various cemetery functions.
• Operate a variety of machinery including trackhoes, backhoes, dump trucks, small tractors, mowers, and other landscape equipment safely and efficiently.
• Maintain and care for city cemeteries, parks, and recreation facilities, ensuring grounds are well-kept and safe.
• Perform opening and closing of graves, including loading and transporting dirt, backfilling, and use of necessary equipment. This includes routine maintenance and care for gravesites, including placement of fill dirt, sod and other tasks.
• Perform herbicide and pesticide spraying to maintain grass, tree lines, fences, and other vegetation.
• Assist with maintenance and minor repairs of mowers and small equipment to ensure operational readiness.
• Follow directions carefully and utilize mapping or layout plans accurately for grave plot locations and cemetery organization. Follow all City and equipment safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for self and others.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects as part of daily duties.
• Capable of performing physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments under extreme heat, cold, and various weather conditions.

Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates ability in operation of equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, tractors, backhoes, and other motorized equipment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and interact professionally with the general public. Maintain a respectful and professional attitude toward the public, providing courteous service at all times.
• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to all safety protocols.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently on occasion, managing tasks without direct supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with other City employees, supervisors, and departments to complete tasks efficiently.
• Must be able to work a rotation of weekends and be available for call-in during severe weather or other urgent City operations.
