CITY OF HATTIESBURG 2021 REDISTRICTING

PUBLIC MEETINGS

Every 10 years following the decennial census, ward lines must be redrawn so that each ward is substantially equal in population. This process, called redistricting, falls under the purview of the Hattiesburg City Council and is important to ensure population equality and voting rights protection. As a key part of the process, public hearings were held for the purpose of reviewing the proposed redistricting plans and receiving written and oral comments.

Details regarding public hearings for each ward were as follows:

Ward 1

Monday, November 22, 2021 from 6 pm – 7:30 p.m.

Location:  Thad Cochran Center – #216 Barbara Ross Room (USM Campus)

Ward 2

Monday, November 29, 2021 | 6 pm – 7:30 p.m.

PROCESS UPDATES

January 18, 2022 | Hattiesburg City Council Votes to Select Redistricting Plan 

On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, the Hattiesburg City Council voted 4-0 to select Redistricting Plan – Alternate 3. The Council made this selection from 9 different plans that were proposed by redistricting consultant Bridge & Watson and submitted by various community members.

Moving forward, the process will now begin to draft an ordinance providing the legal description of each new City Ward and the respective polling places within each ward.

November 8, 2021 | Council Begins Reviewing Proposed Plans

The proposed redistricting plans may be viewed at the links below and they will be available for review in the Council Clerk’s office located on the 2nd floor of City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, Hattiesburg, MS  39401 between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Written comments related to the redistricting plan will be accepted until December 10, 2021 at 5 PM.  Comments can be mailed to City Hall, Council Office, P.O. Box 1898, Hattiesburg, MS 39403-1898 or emailed to council@hattiesburgms.com.
