Position: Recreation Specialist I / Summer Camp Counselor
Department: Parks & Recreation
Rate of Pay: $11.00
Nature of Work:
The Summer Camp Counselor works under the direct supervision of Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation program staff and the Summer Camp Site Supervisor.
Counselors are responsible for supervising and leading daily camp activities while maintaining a safe, positive, and structured environment for children. This position requires individuals who enjoy working with children and who can demonstrate patience, responsibility, and strong teamwork.
Camp days can be long and physically demanding. Counselors should expect to be active throughout the entire day and may work outdoors in extreme heat or changing weather conditions.
Counselors must maintain constant supervision of campers and enforce rules and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of all participants.
Examples of Work:
• Supervise groups of children throughout the entire camp day both visually and audibly
• Enforce camp rules and safety procedures at all times
• Lead and assist with recreational activities such as sports, games, arts and crafts, music, science activities, and educational programming
• Serve as a positive mentor and role model for campers
• Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing daily camp activities
• Maintain daily attendance and activity records as required
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with campers, staff members, parents, and visitors
• Assist with maintaining camp equipment, supplies, and activity areas
• Participate in all required staff meetings and training sessions
• Work outdoors in extreme heat and changing environmental conditions
• Perform additional related duties as assigned
Work Expectations:
Working with children requires patience, responsibility, and professionalism. Summer Camp Counselors are expected to:
• Remain attentive and actively engaged with campers at all times
• Demonstrate patience and positive behavior management
• Work cooperatively with other counselors and supervisors as part of a team
• Maintain a professional attitude and represent the City of Hattiesburg in a positive manner
• Be prepared for long, active days that include walking, standing, and outdoor activities
Cell Phone Policy:
Cell phones are required for communication purposes; however, phones are not permitted for personal use during camp hours. Staff must remain focused on camper supervision at all times. Phones may only be used for emergency or work-related communication.
Qualifications:
• Must be sixteen (16) years of age or older
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to participate in recreational activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and group activities
• Ability to swim
• Must have a cell phone and email address for communication
• Must maintain professionalism consistent with the City of Hattiesburg Employee Handbook
