Hattiesburg Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart Announces Retirement After Transformational Tenure

Hattiesburg, Mississippi  – Hattiesburg Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart will retire effective Dec. 31, 2025, concluding a distinguished career in fire service and nearly eight years of leadership with the Hattiesburg Fire Department.

Stewart was first appointed fire chief in 2018 following a unanimous vote of the Hattiesburg City Council approving Mayor Toby Barker’s nomination. He was reappointed in 2021 and 2025 and has led the department through a period of significant growth, modernization and improved service delivery.

During his tenure, the Hattiesburg Fire Department improved its Mississippi State Rating Bureau fire rating from Class 4 to Class 3, reflecting enhanced fire protection capabilities for residents and businesses. Under Stewart’s leadership, the city constructed Station 9, completed major renovations at Stations 1, 5 and 7, and added five new fire apparatuses to the department’s fleet.

Stewart also oversaw operational and workforce improvements, including reaching full staffing levels despite an increase in required positions, raising the department’s starting salary to $45,000 and implementing additional incentives for training and education. Fire Administration was relocated to a new facility, further strengthening the department’s organizational capacity.

“Chief Stewart has led the Hattiesburg Fire Department with professionalism, integrity and a genuine commitment to developing the people who serve our city,” Mayor Toby Barker said. “From improving our fire rating to investing in facilities, equipment and personnel, his leadership has left a lasting impact on public safety in Hattiesburg.”

Stewart brought more than two decades of fire service experience to Hattiesburg, including service as a station captain with the Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport Fire Department and 10 years with the Canton Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. He also served 12 years with the Mississippi Air National Guard and was deployed twice as a flight medic.

“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Hattiesburg and work alongside the dedicated men and women of the Hattiesburg Fire Department,” Stewart said. “I am grateful for the support of city leadership, our firefighters and staff, and the community we serve, and I take pride in the progress made during my tenure. I am confident the department is well-positioned to continue its mission of excellence and service.”
