Position: Crew Supervisor
Department: Parks & Recreation
Division: Cemetery
Rate of Pay: $18.50/hr.
Nature of Work
This is a hands-on leadership role that involves working closely with the cemetery crew to ensure the maintenance and operation of city cemeteries. The Crew Supervisor will actively participate in daily tasks, including mowing, weed eating, blowing, cutting, and general upkeep. This position primarily works outdoors, year-round. He or she should lead by example, working alongside staff to maintain a well-kept and respectful environment.
In addition to maintenance, the Crew Supervisor will assist in the grave plot purchases, burial arrangements and marking of graves for service.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Work directly with the crew to complete daily maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and debris removal.
• Establish and maintain clear maintenance schedules to ensure all areas remain in top condition.
• Oversee and assist with the opening and closing of graves.
• Operate and maintain cemetery equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, mowers, and trimmers.
• Coordinate and communicate with funeral homes, monument companies, and the public regarding burials and cemetery services.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate staff while actively working in the field.
• Ensure all work aligns with city regulations and safety protocols.
• Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge/Skills
• Ability to manage a variety of tasks and prioritize needs based on scheduling, public feedback, emergencies, etc.
• Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment, including backhoes and mowers.
• Knowledge of cemetery layout and maintenance best practices.
• Proficiency in scheduling and coordinating daily work assignments.
• Effective leadership and teamwork skills with a strong focus on working alongside employees.
• Clear communication and customer service skills.
Qualifications
• At least one (1) year of grounds maintenance or cemetery management experience (or equivalent experience).
• Experience leading or supervising a team in an outdoor work environment is a plus.
• Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
