Application Process

Thank you for your interest in employment with the City of Hattiesburg. There are several ways to apply for an open, posted position:

• Apply in person at the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. All available jobs are posted for review; or

• Go to the Download section on the left side of the City's Web site, click on it and drop down to the Administration section, click on Employment Application, and print application. Complete employment application and submit to the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, Downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. Or, if desired, you may mail completed application to, Human Resources, P. O. Box 1898, Hattiesburg MS, 39403-1898.

• Be a registered voter in current county/city of residence
• Reside within ten (10) miles of Hattiesburg city limits or

Starting Salary:

Academy Recruit: $22,000.00
Certified after academy $27,600.00

Bus Driver

Position: Bus Driver

Department: Federal & State Programs

Division: Mass Transit

Rate of Pay: $10.50/hr

Nature of Work:

This is responsible skilled work in the operation of a municipal bus. Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Mass Transit and subject to immediate supervision and inspection by the Director. No supervisory work is involved.

Examples of Work:

• Drives a municipal bus on a route with a fixed schedule for the purpose of safely transporting passengers.
• Makes necessary records, including bus logs, and makes accident and other reports as required.
• Turns in fare money at the end of shift.
• Reports mechanical defects, road hazards, and other conditions affecting safe driving.
• Performs related work as required.

Desirable Qualifications:

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus one (1) year of related experience or any combination of education, training, and/or experience which reflect job qualifications.
• Applicants must have a Class "B" commercial driver's license with "P" endorsement.
• Considerable knowledge in driving buses or heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions to be taken in avoiding accidents.
• Ability to deal courteously with the public.

Crew Worker – FT

Position: Crew Worker – FT

Department: Public Works

Rate of Pay: $9.00/hr

Nature of Work: This is semi-skilled maintenance and repair work. Will maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, drainage ditches.

Examples or Work:
Maintain and Repair City Streets
• Secure area to ensure safety of the public
• Haul asphalt, dirt and gravel to appropriate locations as needed
• Lay concrete to repair city streets and driveways
• Fill potholes existing on City streets
• Clear streets of debris and garbage
• Replace sod when damage is done during construction

Maintain drainage ditches and right of ways
• Lay pipes for drainage ditches
• Clear debris from ditches
• Mow-weed-eat and rake leaves around right of ways and other city streets

Daily maintenance of departmental vehicles
• Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking tire pressures, oil and fluid levels and pressures before each run
• Complete weekly schedule maintenance on trucks
• Clean trucks at the end of each day

Performs other duties as directed.

Desirable Qualifications
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR Desirable Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent. Prior experience working with asphalt and concrete preferred. Position requires heavy lifting, stooping, etc. Will be working in extreme weather conditions. Must have a valid Ms drivers license. Must have good communication skills and have the ability to follow instructions. Must be dependable.

PLANNING DIVISION MANAGER

POSITION: PLANNING DIVISION MANAGER
DEPARTMENT: URBAN DEVELOPMENT
RATE OF PAY: $48,000 DOE (Depending on Experience)
NATURE OF WORK:
This is the highest-level position within the Planning Division for an experienced Urban Planner.  Responsibilities include supervision of the City planning and zoning programs within the Department; overall administration of various land use and urban design related ordinances, site plan review, neighborhood improvement program, floodplain management, and the Citizens Action Center ;  provide experience-based interpretations and oversight of the Comprehensive Plan, the Land Development Code, Historic Conservation and Flood ordinances; oversee the processes for proposed new development and re-development projects; work is performed with independent initiative and judgment under the direction of the Director of the Department of Urban Development.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
• Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs City Planning within the department.
• Develops planning, zoning and subdivision ordinances and procedures in accordance with such ordinances, rules, procedures and regulations; provide technical advice on related ordinance preparation.
• Monitors and enforces compliance with Federal, State and Local laws and regulations relating to planning matters.
• Represents the department, relative to planning and zoning matters, at meetings with the Planning Commission, City Council, Mayor and other advisory groups, as directed by the Department Director.
• Directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary planning-related records, directs and participates in the preparation of reports on zoning, land use, environmental issues, floodplain, site development and urban planning.
• Oversees the Neighborhood Improvement Coordinator and the Neighborhood Network program.
• Oversees the Action Center staff and the procedures for receiving citizens’ complaints, etc.
• Serves as a staff liaison for local and regional boards, committees and commissions as directed by the Department Director.
• Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or a related field and or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  AICP certification preferred.
• Prefer a minimum of eight years of experience in municipal planning at the Manager’s level.
• Thorough knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws and standards applicable to planning, land/natural resource management, zoning, economic development, historic preservation, and the environment.
• Extensive knowledge of land use, storm water compliance, comprehensive plans, form-based codes with design guidelines and interpretation of zoning regulations using modern theories, principles and techniques of urban planning,
• Considerable experience in making public presentations and ability to communicate orally and in writing.
• Ability to identify and develop solutions to guide the future growth, design and aesthetics of the built environment and positively influence community leaders and the public in acceptance of such solutions.
• Experience and skills in using various computer software (Microsoft Word products, GIS, etc.); map interpretations (tax, floodplain, zoning, property boundaries, etc.); Site Plan Review plan submittals, and site related documents.

• Assess adequacy of control procedures currently in place; develop recommendations for and help implement improved internal control and documentation
• Tests and documents the existence of effective internal control procedures currently in place
• Establish and maintain open communication with management and communicates audit findings as appropriate
• Documents audit tests, results and audit findings
• Coordinates activities with the City’s independent auditor
• Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, auditing, business or a related field
• 2-3 years internal audit and/or public accounting experience auditing governmental entities
• Knowledge of GASB requirements
• Knowledge of compliance for federal grants
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
