POSITION: Engineering Technician
DEPARTMENT: Public Services
RATE OF PAY: $13.10/hr + Depending on Experience
NATURE OF WORK: Ability to supervise; good communication skills; ability to use GPS survey instruments; knowledge of Engineering and GIS programs; knowledge of surveying practices and mathematical skills; knowledge of trigonometry; computer literate; knowledge of materials, methods and maintenance of construction in Public Services.
• Integrating GPS data into GIS programs
• Inspection of projects during construction
• Read and interpret plans and specifications
• Mathematical calculations
• Prepares filed notes for maps and drawings
• Familiar with various computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word
• Conducts field surveys and corrections of city maps
• Familiar with inventory control
• Acts as liaison between office and field• Maintains files

OPEN RECRUITMENT FOR POLICE OFFICERS
The city of Hattiesburg is seeking qualified persons to become police officers.
1. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
2. Be a United States citizen.
3. Must have a High School Diploma or GED (college degree is preferred).
4. Have no felony arrests or other serious criminal background.
5. Reside within ten (10) miles of Hattiesburg city limits or relocate within six (6) months of employment.
6. Possess a valid driver’s license.
7. Be a registered voter in his/her current county/city of residence.
8. Be of good moral character
Candidates in Police Academy will be paid while they are in the academy at an hourly rate of pay equal to $22,000/yr. with a change of salary effective upon graduation.

The Civil Service Exam will be offered only on the following date and time at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy (53 Academy Drive, Hattiesburg, MS) - Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 9:00am. You must have your application in at City Hall prior to the deadline to be able to take the Civil Service Exam.

Crew Foreman - Streets
Department: Public Works
Rate of Pay: $11.00/hr
Nature of Work:
This is a skilled position in which the candidate will work to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, and drainage ditches. The Crew Foreman will supervise on a daily basis between four and seven full-time employees. The Crew Foreman works regular hours year round with occasional overtime when the workload demands it; and occasional night work but no shift work is required. The person in this position is on call only in the event of a storm or other emergency. 100% of work required is outdoors in all weather conditions. This position has accountability for safety and legal issues related to the work for which the position is responsible. The Crew Foreman is exposed to chemical and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis.

Verify that property lines are accurate before beginning a project

Operate Departmental equipment to dig ditches, holes, and transport asphalt and sand
Use proper patching material to maintain streets, including concrete and cold patch
Oversee various parts of resurfacing projects, as directed
Lay pipe for drainage ditches
Clear debris from ditches
Fit pipes together using couplings, bolts and/or plastic ties
Remove excess silt, grass and debris between culverts
Assist with determining which ditches need repair
Provide daily maintenance of departmental vehicles
A High School diploma or GED, or better is required. This position requires the person to have the skills necessary for proper use of assigned equipment. Candidate must possess good oral, written and mathematical skills. Candidate must be a skilled truck driver and heavy equipment operator. Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with residents, elected officials and other City employees. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Mechanic - Mass Transit
Department: Federal & State Programs
Division: Mass Transit
Rate of Pay: $11.50hr
Nature of Work: Mechanic is a maintenance employee, who is capable of performing in a workmanlike manner in a reasonable length of time, with a minimum amount of supervision when necessary, any and all repairs, either major or minor, preventative maintenance, on such vehicles or equipment or units thereof, that are assigned to Hub City Transit Mass Transit Fleet.
Examples of Work: (Duties will vary by assignment)
With minimal supervision, perform all repairs and service such as but not limited to air conditioning and heating systems, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and minor body repair; perform safety inspections of vehicles; perform preventative maintenance on vehicles as scheduled; perform road/service calls and operate HCT fleet vehicles as necessary; abide by all established safety training, and quality assurance programs; request quotes and order fleet maintenance parts. There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis with cleaners and soaps used in a shop. Individuals holding this position may be required to perform “other related duties” as assigned by the Division Manager or Department Director.
Desirable Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus two (2) year of related experience or any combination of education, training, and/or experience which reflect job qualifications. Applicants must have a Class “B” CDL with an airbrake endorsement. Must properly and safely use transit vehicles, forklift, hydraulic lifts, air ratchets, tow trucks, troubleshooting devices and other maintenance and repair machinery. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to maintain professional composure, confidentially; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions. Physical demands involve standing, walking, bending/kneeling/lifting/climbing.
Work Schedule: This position may require flexible scheduling. Schedule may vary to meet demands and hours of the operation of bus service, including overtime, split shift, holidays, weekends, nights, and irregular hours.

GIS Intern - Part Time
Status: Part time
Department: Federal/State Programs
Rate of Pay: $9.00/hr
Nature of Work: To provide assistance to the GIS staff in maintaining database files, creating maps, completing data requests and GPS data collection. Other duties may include assisting in printing, copying hardcopies of City maps, researching and interfacing with other city employees and citizens.
Desirable Qualifications: The successful candidate will preferably have or will be enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's or graduate program in GIS Technologies, Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Civil engineering or a related field. Candidates without a professional degree that have good GIS and programming experience are also encouraged to apply.
Must have hands-on experience with ESRI ArcGIS 9.0 or higher (ArcEditor or higher) products, with proficiencies in the use of MS office suite.
Spatial analyst, Network Analyst and GPS data collection experience is a plus.
Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of database servers (SQL, oracle etc) and programming experience.
