Crew Worker

POSITION: CREW WORKER-GROUNDS –

SEASONAL – SUMMER  EMPLOYMENT MAY 4th – SOMETIME IN AUGUST

DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

DIVISION: LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE

RATE OF PAY: $9.00/HOUR

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

This is manual labor type work.  Incumbent will be exposed to various conditions associated with working manually in the outdoors and will be exposed to extreme summer and winter weather conditions.  Maintains the lawn and grounds for various city-owned property; plants flowers, sod, grass, shrubs and trees; cuts the grass, pulls weeds, waters plants and grass, applies fertilizer and insecticide as directed; mulches trees and plants; edges around sidewalks; picks up paper/trash; repairs sprinkler heads, uses various equipment and tools such as lawnmower, weed eater, rake, shovels, and other related equipment for use in grounds care.  Participates in ball field maintenance on occasion.

 

Operates City-owned vehicles to include trucks, tractor, bobcat, pressure washer, blower, and other specialized vehicles in the daily performance of duties; adheres to all local, state and federal safety regulations.

 

Picks up trash and debris in buildings and on lawns and grounds; collects and removes recyclables and other items; empties trash containers and receptacles; removes and disposes of trash according to city policy.

 

Performs preventive and routine maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment; changes oil and filters, replaces parts and makes adjustments as necessary; removes and replaces shafts, blades, and other maintained mower parts; ensures proper working condition of all equipment; completes vehicle and equipment maintenance reports.

 

Cleans and maintains bathrooms at recreational facilities; cleans toilets, sinks, and other fixtures; mops and wax floors.

 

Cleans and maintains pools and fountains; applies chemicals as directed.

 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs other related duties as required; after hours and weekend work required when assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; 2 months previous experience and/or training involving general grounds and building maintenance desired; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi driver’s license.

FACILITY MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

POSITION TITLE: FACILITY MAINT. REPAIRER

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: WATER & SEWER / LAGOONS

BEGINNING PAY: $10.00/HOUR

NATURE OF WORK: Provide maintenance and repair of equipment for the City of Hattiesburg’s Sewer, Sewer Lagoons and Water Plants.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 

  • Assist in the design, control, and maintenance of sewer rebuild lift stations.
  • Assist in all electrical repairs and constructions for the department.
  • Assist in the rebuilding of motor control centers and replacing starters.
  • Assist in checking main stations bi-weekly for any repairs that may be necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing electrical feeding to aerator in the lagoons.
  • Assist in maintaining appearance of grounds as needed.
  • Assist in repairing of sewer pumps, valves and electrical panels.
  • Assist in maintenance of chlorinator and dechlorinator at the south lagoon.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

 

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; applicant should have a basic knowledge of electricity and reading of schematics.  Incumbent is accountable for safety and legal issues related to the work for which position is responsible for.  Exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials including, but not limited to Chlorine, Sulphur Dioxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, Ammonia and Methane on a weekly basis.  Knowledgeable of equipment, OSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safety.  Position involves lifting and climbing and working outside in all weather conditions.  Qualified applicants must have and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s license.

Division Manager Code Enforcement

POSITION: Division Manager Code Enforcement

DEPARTMENT: Urban Development

DIVISION: LAND CODE

RATE OF PAY: $33,000 (DOE)

Nature of Work:

Directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Code Enforcement Division within the Urban Development Department including general code enforcement; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Urban Development.

 

Representative Duties 

  • Assumes management responsibility for the development, implementation and supervision of the code enforcement program and the activities of the Code Enforcement Division including interpretation and enforcement of Federal, State, and Municipal codes, to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of residents and visitors.
  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; recommends and administers policies and procedures.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for assigned staff involved in investigating code violations and initiating procedures to abate violations; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Participates in field activities and investigations; reviews reports prepared by Code Enforcement Officers; issues citations and prepares cases for prosecution; prepares materials for Council hearings; testifies in Environmental Court regarding compliance action.
  • Serves as the liaison for the Code Enforcement Division to other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; attends various meetings to work with and educate citizens; responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints; negotiates and resolves sensitive and controversial issues.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge/Ability

  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Legal procedures involved in the enforcement of land use and environmental regulations.
  • Court documents and procedures including procedures for citation issuance and obtaining various types of inspection warrants.
  • Interpret tax/parcel maps, conduct property owner title searches, and run Delta Systems.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office, or similar computer software applications, smart phones, digital maps, digital time keeping program.
  • Pursue and maintain all available code enforcement, inspection and environmental certifications.
  • Represent the City in a professional manner in dealing with staff, citizens, news media, and other agencies and groups.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent driving record and a valid driver’s license.

 

Education and Experience Guidelines:

Education/Training: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public administration, geography, architecture, construction technology, law enforcement or a related field.  Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible code enforcement, investigative, and/or inspection experience including two years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.

Sewer Crew Worker

Position Title: Crew Worker

Nature of Work: This is manual labor of a semi-skilled nature to install and maintain sewer lines or related work as required.  Work involves the performance of manual task requiring limited skills or special knowledge acquired through work experience.  The physical demands of the position may require walking, standing, lifting or reaching.  The working conditions require outside labor in all weather conditions.  Assignments may frequently include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated equipment or other devices.  Assignments may include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive equipment incidental to regular duties.  A valid Mississippi Driver’s license is required to be maintained.  The position requires after hours and on-call availability as needed.  The position requires Hepatitis B vaccination.  All work is performed under the direct supervision of a foreman.

 

Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Experience (certificate/license): Experience preferred, must have and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s license.

Nature of Work: This is manual labor of a semi-skilled nature to install and maintain water mains and services, check for water leaks, turning on water service for new accounts, installs and removes water meters, and locating water meters and service lines or related work as required.  Work involves responsibility for answering emergency calls and customer complaints regarding leaks and breaks in water service.  The physical demands of the position may require walking, standing, lifting or reaching.  The working conditions require outside labor in all weather conditions.  Assignments may frequently include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated equipment or other devices.  Assignments may include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive equipment incidental to regular duties.  A valid Mississippi Driver’s license is required to be maintained.  The position may require after hours and on-call availability as needed.  All work is performed under the direct supervision of a foreman.

 

Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Experience (certificate/License: Experience Preferred, must have and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s license.
