APPLICATION PROCESSThank your for your interest in employment with the City of Hattiesburg. There are several ways to apply for an open, posted position: 1. Apply in person at the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. All available jobs are posted for review; or 2. Go to the Download section on the left-hand side of the City's Website, click on it and drop down to the Administration section, click on Employment Application, and print application. Complete employment application and sumit to the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. Bus Driver
Department: Federal & State Programs
Division: Mass Transit
Rate of pay: $9.00/hr
Nature of work: This is responsible, skilled work in the operation of a municipal bus. Work is performed under the general direction of the director of mass transit and subject to immediate supervision and inspection by the director. No supervisory work is involved.
Examples of work: Drives a municipal bus on a route with a fixed schedule for the purpose of safely transporting passengers. Makes necessary records, including bus logs, and makes accident and other reports as required. Turns in fare money at the end of shift. Reports mechanical defects, road hazards, and other conditions affecting safe driving. Performs related work as required.
Desirable qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. Equivalent plus one (1) year of related experience or any combination of education, training and/or experience which reflect job qualifications. Applicants must have a class “b” commercial drivers license with “p” endorsement. Considerable knowledge in driving buses or heavy equipment. Knowledge of the traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions to be taken in avoiding accidents. Ability to deal courteously with the public.

Rate of Pay: $9.00/hr
Nature of Work: An initial training period will consist of learning the treatment and distribution of water to the citizens of Hattiesburg. Upon completion of training, incumbent will be assigned as an Operating Engineer whose primary duty will consist of the operation of water plants.
Work Examples: Full operation of Water Plants consisting of performing chemical tests, monitoring water pressure, keeping accurate records of water being distributed and maintaining plant equipment. Answers telephone and dispatches request for service call to work crews. In emergencies will be responsible for notifying appropriate personnel. Ground maintenance on plant grounds, including mowing, weed-eating, trimming of bushes and picking up trash. Routing flushing of assigned fire hydrants and other work as assigned by supervisor.
Desirable Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, ability to read charts and graphs. Must have good communication skills and be computer literate. Requires knowledge of lawn equipment and mechanical aptitude.

Nature of Work: This is a semi-skilled position responsible for the operation of light to medium automotive equipment. The work involved responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of pickup trucks, medium sized dump trucks, light tractors and/or similar automotive equipment. Manual labor with sewer repair crews is required to install and maintain sewer lines or related work as required. Work involves the performance of manual tasks requiring limited skills or special knowledge acquired through work experience. The physical demands of the position may require walking, standing, lifting, or reaching. The working conditions require outside labor in all weather conditions. Assignments may frequently include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated equipment or other devices.
Desirable Qualifications: This position requires a valid Mississippi Commercial Driver’s License of Class B or greater and is required to be maintained while employed. Will be required to work after hours and on-call availability as needed. This position requires vaccination against Hepatitis B.

Nature of Work: This is manual labor of a semi-skilled nature to install and maintain water mains and services, check for water leaks, turning on water service for new accounts, turning off water service for delinquent accounts, installs and removes water meters, locating water meters and service lines and retrieving meter information for the Water Billing Office or related work as required. Work involves responsibility for answering emergency calls and customer complaints regarding leaks and breaks in water service. The physical demands of the position may require walking, standing, lifting or reaching. The working conditions required outside labor in all weather conditions. Assignments may frequently include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated equipment or other devices. Assignments may include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive equipment incidental to regular duties.
Desirable Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. This position requires a valid Mississippi Driver’s License and it is required to be maintained while employed. The position may require work after hours and on-call availability as needed. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a Foreman. Prior directly related experience is preferred.

Assignments may include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive equipment incidental to regular duties.
