Application Process

Thank you for your interest in employment.  Follow the steps below to apply for an open position.

Submit Application

  • Submit your application online or in HR using the City’s computer.
  • Your application will be processed and sent almost immediately to the department of the position you applied for.

Application Review

  • The department with the position you applied for will review ALL applications submitted.
  • If you are going to be selected for an interview the department will contact you usually with a week or so after the position is closed. 

Applying for More than One Position

  • You may apply for more than one position even if at different departments
  • To do so click on the “Add” button under the position on the application.
  • Your application will go to all of the departments you applied for.

Applications Remain on File for 6 months

  • If you are not selected for a position you applied for, you may continue to apply for other open positions by putting in a new application or calling HR at 601-545-4571 to request your previous application be moved to be considered for another position.
  • Applications remain on file for 6 months.

Applications for Police Officer or Fire Fighter

  • Applications for the above are only accepted during an active recruitment process.  Notice will be placed on this website when they are being accepted.
  • Once a recruitment period begins, all applicants must apply in person at the Human Resources Department.

Mechanic

Position: Mechanic

 

Department: Public Services

 

Division: Shop

 

Rate of Pay: $12.00/hr

 

Nature of Work:

 

This is skilled to semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of city vehicles and equipment.  Employees in this class are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of such equipment as automotive cars and trucks, heavy duty class trucks, tractors, mass transit buses, dozers, mowers, pumps, and utility maintenance and construction equipment.  Work is designated by supervisors and is generally inspected by the same in the form of tests and usage.

 

Essential Functions of Job:

 

  • Performs oil and lube jobs on an assortment of equipment.  Under supervision, will perform overhaul and repairs on gasoline engines.
  • Assist in the repair, replacement, and installation of certain parts such as transmissions, brakes, clutches, wheels, etc.
  • Does diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as batteries, terminals, lighting, generators and starters.
  • Makes road tests to insure and inspect defects which have been repaired or to be repaired.
  • Performs minor repairs on pumping systems.
  • Any one position may not include off of the duties listed, nor is it meant not to include other duties.
  • Performs related work as requested or required.

 

 

Desirable Education and Experience:

 

Graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent with one year working experience as an automotive mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills, knowledge and ability to perform the required tasks.

 

Application must possess a Commercial Driver’s License of at least a Class “B” or agree to obtain a commercial driver’s license with six (6) months of hire.

Crew Worker

Position: Crew Worker – FT

Department: Public Works

Rate of Pay: $9.00/hr


Nature of Work:

This is semi-skilled maintenance and repair work.  Will maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, drainage ditches.

Examples or Work:

Maintain and Repair City Streets

  • Secure area to ensure safety of the public
  • Haul asphalt, dirt and gravel to appropriate locations as needed
  • Lay concrete to repair city streets and driveways
    • Fill potholes existing on City streets
    • Clear streets of debris and garbage
    • Replace sod when damage is done during construction

Maintain drainage ditches and right of ways

  • Lay pipes for drainage ditches
  • Clear debris from ditches
  • Mow-weed-eat and rake leaves around right of ways and other city streets

Daily maintenance of departmental vehicles

  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking tire pressures, oil and fluid levels and pressures before each run
  • Complete weekly schedule maintenance on trucks
  • Clean trucks at the end of each day

Performs other duties as directed.

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR                            Desirable Qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent.  Prior experience working with asphalt and concrete preferred.  Position requires heavy lifting, stooping, etc.  Will be working in extreme weather conditions.  Must have a valid Ms drivers license.  Must have good communication skills and have the ability to follow instructions.  Must be dependable.

Crew Worker (Seasonal Part Time/Urban Youth Corp)

POSITION:                CREW WORKER (SEASONAL PART TIME/URBAN YOUTH CORP)

 

DEPARTMENT:        PARKS AND RECREATION

 

DIVISION:                RECREATION MAINTENANCE

 

RATE OF PAY:         $9.00/HR

 

NATURE OF WORK:

 

THIS IS MANUAL LABOR TYPE WORK. INCUMBENT WILL BE EXPOSED TO VARIOUS CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH WORKING MANUALLY IN THE OUTDOORS AND WILL BE EXPOSED TO EXTREME SUMMER WEATHER CONDITIONS.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • CUT AND REMOVE LIMBS, BRUSH, WEEDS ETC.

 

  • PICK UP PAPER.

 

  • WEAR PROPER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT.

 

  • OPERATE WEED EATER AND BRUSH CUTTERS.

 

  • PERFORMS LANDSCAPE DUTIES SUCH AS MULCHING, PLANTING, MOWING

 

  • PERFORMS RELATED WORK AS REQUIRED.

 

  • CLEAN RESTROOMS

 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 17 YEARS OF AGE AND MAXIMUM OF 24 YEARS OLD.

 

MUST BE ENROLLED IN HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE

 

MUST BE ABLE TO LIFT AND CARRY A MAXIMUM OF 100LBS.

 

MUST BE ABLE TO WORK 40 HOURS PER WEEK MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AND WEEKENDS AS ASSIGNED.

 

MUST POSSESS A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE

Equipment Operator

Position: Equipment Operator 

Department:                Sanitation

 

Division:                      Public Works

Rate of Pay:                $10.00/hr



Nature of Work:

  • Skilled work in the operation of light and heavy-duty construction maintenance equipment.
  • Operator is responsible for daily preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Assignments are usually received in the form of orders to accomplish a specific task.
  • Supervision may be exercised over a small group of laborers.

Examples of Work:

  • Operation of equipment such as dump trucks, back-hoes, dozers, etc. for repairs and construction.
  • Operates a front-end loader in loading asphalt, gravel, sand, rock slag slurry and similar materials onto trucks.
  • Performs related work as required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience is desired
  • Must have and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license.
