SUMMARY:An Evening with Dr. William Sturkey
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Dr. William Sturkey will begin with a reception at 5:00 PM\, followed by a speaking engagement at 6:00 PM. \nThere will also be an opportunity for a questions and answers session\, and a book signing to close out the evening. \nBooks will be available for purchase the night of the event. \nThis event is proudly presented by The Hattiesburg Public Library in conjunction with the Sixth Street Museum District. \nDr. William Sturkey’s book titled Hattiesburg: An American City in Black and White provides a detailed history of Hattiesburg\, Mississippi. From its founding in 1882\, to its key role in the civil rights movement\, this publication powerfully conveys the realities of the Jim Crow era. \nAssistant professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and co-editor of To Write in the Light of Freedom\, Sturkey charts the parallel and starkly unequal experiences of the town’s black and white residents in alternating narratives\, telling the stories of die-hard members of the Old South—including Faulkner’s great-grandfather\, a Confederate veteran—and several generations of the Smith family\, who started as rural sharecroppers and eventually ran a pharmacy where Medgar Evers and others met to strategize. \nThis event is free to attend\, with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come\, first served basis. \n
