City of Hattiesburg Mayor’s Financial Education Initiative Tax Partners Observe National Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day

The City of Hattiesburg will join others cities throughout the United States in observing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on January 27.

The EITC is a refundable tax credit available to qualifying lower-wage workers and their families. The EITC and CTC (Children Tax Credit) programs have lifted millions out of poverty, half of them children.

Those who qualify can receive free tax filing help through the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs, and those who would like to learn how to prepare their own return are able to by visiting our Facilitated Self-Assistance (FSA) site. Community volunteers receive IRS-approved training to assist individuals with tax returns.
During the tax season there are locations in and around the City of Hattiesburg that offers free tax preparation and electronic filing. The MFEI tax partners will begin their filing season the week of January 30. To find the nearest location and hours of operations, please call the City of Hattiesburg at 601.554.1005.
