Purpose
The purpose of the Hattiesburg Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council is to provide an opportunity for the youth of Hattiesburg to acquire a greater knowledge, understanding and appreciation for our governmental systems. The youth are challanged to bring forth different perspectives for the Mayor and other city officials by providing feedback on issues important to youth. The Leadership Council has a high focus on fostering and developing a spirit of giving back to the community, by planning and participating in community service projects.
The youth are provided opportunities for development of their leadership skills; to participate in activities that will benefit them in pursuing their educational goals; and finally, to reach out and develop relationships with youth from other schools and areas, to share ideas, perspectives and build a stronger sense of community.
Mission
The mission of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council is to give a stronger voice to the youth of Hattiesburg through projects organized to improve our city; to give students firsthand knowledge of how government operates; to foster development of leadership skills; and, to bring students from all area schools and those that are home-schooled together to share ideas and experiences.
