Application Process

Thank you for your interest in employment with the City of Hattiesburg. There are several ways to apply for an open, posted position:

• Apply in person at the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. All available jobs are posted for review; or

• Go to the Download section on the left side of the City's Web site, click on it and drop down to the Administration section, click on Employment Application, and print application. Complete employment application and submit to the Human Resources Department, 3rd floor City Hall, 200 Forrest Street, Downtown Hattiesburg, directly across from the Saenger Theater. Or, if desired, you may mail completed application to, Human Resources, P. O. Box 1898, Hattiesburg MS, 39403-1898.

Crew Work (Seasonal Urban Youth Corp)

 

DEPARTMENT:        PARKS AND RECREATION

NATURE OF WORK:

 

THIS IS MANUAL LABOR TYPE WORK. INCUMBENT WILL BE EXPOSED TO VARIOUS CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH WORKING MANUALLY IN THE OUTDOORS AND WILL BE EXPOSED TO EXTREME SUMMER WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Crew Supervisor/Traffic Signal Tech

Department:                Traffic Control and Operations

Division:                      Public Services

Rate of Pay:                $14.00/hr + DOE

 

Nature of Work:  This is a skilled position in which the candidate will learn the additional skills necessary to install, repair, and maintain traffic signals.  Work involves extensive pole, aerial, and electrical knowledge.  Must possess computer knowledge and supervisory skills.

 

Essential Duties: 

 Install poles, span wire, signal heads, loop detectors, electrical cable, conduit, and controller cabinets.  

Change bulbs in traffic signal heads.  

 Repair damaged heads, wires, cables, cabinets, and all other devices necessary for traffic signal operation. 

Respond to trouble calls at night and on weekends (after training period is complete). 

Supervisor capabilities over signal and sign crews.  

The candidate will learn the street marking section and the traffic sign section of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  

Supervise and assist in the signage and stripping of City streets. 

Performs other work as directed.

 

Physical Demands of Position:   Standing, Manual Dexterity, Walking, Climbing, Lifting, Reaching, use of hand tools after proper training.  Must be able to tolerate heights working in a bucket truck.

 

Working Conditions:  Will work both inside and outside in varying and extreme weather conditions.

 

Certificates/License: Must have and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.  Once employed, candidate must complete at least one I.M.A. certification training per year until he/she obtains a Level 2 certification in both Signs/Markings and Traffic Signals. 

 

Education:  Education:  High School diploma or G.E.D. Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and/or Electronics Technology.

Work Experience:  Four (4) years work experience in Electrical/Electronics field.

 

Alternative to Minimum Qualifications:  Applicant may substitute four (4) years work experience in related field, along with a two (2) year Junior College degree if he/she demonstrates extensive knowledge in Electrical/Electronics field.

Crew Worker - Grounds I

Division:                         Landscape Maintenance

 

 

Rate of Pay:                   $8.50/Hr. 

 

 

Essential Functions:

 

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

This is manual labor type work.  Incumbent will be exposed to various conditions associated with working manually in the outdoors and will be exposed to extreme summer and winter weather conditions.  Maintains the lawn and grounds for various city-owned property; plants flowers, sod, grass, shrubs and trees; cuts the grass, pulls weeds, waters plants and grass, applies fertilizer and insecticide as directed; mulches trees and plants; edges around sidewalks; picks up paper/trash; repairs sprinkler heads, uses various equipment and tools such as lawnmower, weed eater, rake, shovels, and other related equipment for use in grounds care.  Participates in ballfield maintenance on occasion. 

 

Operates City-owned vehicles to include trucks, tractor, bobcat, pressure washer, blower, and other specialized vehicles in the daily performance of duties; adheres to all local, state and federal safety regulations.

 

Picks up trash and debris in buildings and on lawns and grounds; collects and removes recyclables and other items; empties trash containers and receptacles; removes and disposes of trash according to city policy. 

 

Performs preventive and routine maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment; changes oil and filters, replaces parts and makes adjustments as necessary; removes and replaces shafts, blades, and other maintained mower parts; ensures proper working condition of all equipment; completes vehicle and equipment maintenance reports.

 

Cleans and maintains bathrooms at recreational facilities; cleans toilets, sinks, and other fixtures; mops and wax floors.

 

Cleans and maintains pools and fountains; applies chemicals as directed.

 

Additional Functions:

 

Performs other related duties as required; after hours and weekend work required when assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

High school diploma or GED; 2 months previous experience and/or training involving general grounds and building maintenance desired; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi driver’s license.

Equipment Operator - Public Svcs

Department:  Public Services
 
Division:  Public Works
 
Rate of Pay:  $9.50/hr
 
Nature of Work:
• Skilled work in the operation of light and heavy-duty construction maintenance equipment.
• Operator is responsible for daily preventive maintenance of equipment.
• Assignments are usually received in the form of orders to accomplish a specific task. 
• Supervision may be exercised over a small group of laborers.

Examples of Work:
• Operation of equipment such as dump trucks, back-hoes, dozers, etc. for repairs and construction.
• Operates a front-end loader in loading asphalt, gravel, sand, rock slag slurry and similar materials onto trucks. 
• Performs related work as required. 

Desirable Qualifications:
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Two (2) years work related experience in concrete finishing, culvert installation and asphalt lay-down and repair of sidewalk, curbs, and gutters.
• Must have a valid commercial driver’s license.

Mechanic (Full-time)

Department:              Public Services

 

Division:                     Shop

 

Rate of Pay:               $9.50/hr

 

Nature of Work:

 

This is skilled to semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of city vehicles and equipment.  Employees in this class are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of such equipment as automotive cars and trucks, heavy duty class trucks, tractors, mass transit buses, dozers, mowers, pumps, and utility maintenance and construction equipment.  Work is designated by supervisors and is generally inspected by the same in the form of tests and usage.

 

Essential Functions of Job:

                       

  • Performs oil and lube jobs on an assortment of equipment.  Under supervision, will perform overhaul and repairs on gasoline engines.
  • Assist in the repair, replacement, and installation of certain parts such as transmissions, brakes, clutches, wheels, etc.
  • Does diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as batteries, terminals, lighting, generators and starters.
  • Makes road tests to insure and inspect defects which have been repaired or to be repaired.
  • Performs minor repairs on pumping systems.
  • Any one position may not include off of the duties listed, nor is it meant not to include other duties.
  • Performs related work as requested or required.

 

 Desirable Education and Experience:

 

Graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent with one year working experience as an automotive mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills, knowledge and ability to perform the required tasks.

 

Application must possess a Commercial Driver’s License of at least a Class “B” or agree to obtain a commercial driver’s license with six (6) months of hire.
