Industry and Camp Shelby

Hattiesburg benefits from Mississippi’s low taxes, strategic locations, and skilled work force.  The area’s diverse economic base includes health care, education, military, and manufacturing and distribution companies.  Hattiesburg is home to 2 major hospitals: Forrest General Hospital and Wesley Medical Center.

Top manufacturing companies include Kosh Cellulose, Hattiesburg Paper Company, and Kohler Company.  A major economic drive for Hattiesburg is the I-59 technology corridor, a network of high-tech industries supported by over 400 companies and 11,000 employees.

Camp Shelby is the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River and is also based in Hattiesburg.  Camp Shelby, Mississippi, the largest state owned training site in the nation has a long history of serving the country and is considered by many as “a national treasure.” Through the years, Forrest County has developed an enviable reputation for supporting the military. A marble obelisk, akin to a miniature Washington Monument, stands at attention in downtown Hattiesburg’s Veteran’s Park. It salutes the 168 servicemen who gave their lives serving our nation since the Spanish-American War.

Over the years, Camp Shelby has become an integral part of the Hattiesburg Community. With over 1,000 full-time positions and 30 seasonal positions, the camp's economic impact is substantial as well contributing more than $60 million annually through payroll and in state purchases.
