HPD: Arrest Made in First Homicide of 2011

Hattiesburg Police Records First Homicide of the Year

Hattiesburg, MS ∙ February 22, 2011 

 

What initially started as a death investigation left officials with the Hattiesburg Police Department scratching their heads as they were made to record their first homicide for 2011. 

 

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2011, police responded to a unit in the 1200 block of Beverly Hills Drive, Towne Villa Apartments, where they found the body of a deceased female. The victim, later identified as Brittany Morgan, 22, was a student at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Immediately, a suspect had already been charged with murder in the case and an arrest warrant was issued for him. Anthony Rico Gipson, 35, was apprehended around 4 a.m. Monday in a casino parking lot by Gulfport police and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.

Gipson was booked in at the Forrest County Jail on Monday morning and made his initial court appearance on Tuesday before Judge Jolly Matthews. His bond was set at $1million.

School Burglarized and Vandalized

Hattiesburg Police: Suspect Apprehended In School Break-in

Officials with the Hattiesburg Police Department are investigating the burglary of a local school and church that took place on last night.   

On Thursday night, February 17, 2011, an anonymous telephone call to authorities at about 11:20 p.m. led police to respond to Sacred Heart Elementary School in reference to a report of a burglary. Upon officers’ arrival, one suspect fled on foot to the outside of the building, while the other was apprehended.  20-year-old Marquise Lewis was arrested and charged with burglary of a church, burglary of a commercial building and three counts of burglary of a school.

According to school officials, there is about $25,000 -$30,000 worth of damage to the school.

Hattiesburg Police are still continuing the investigation.


Death Investigation of Pedestrian

Hattiesburg Police Investigates Death of Pedestrian

Hattiesburg, MS ∙ February 9, 2011 

 

The Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating the death of a pedestrian who was hit on last night.  

On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, around 11:30pm, police responded to the intersection of Broadway Drive and Highway 49 in reference to a report of an accident with injury. Upon officers’ arrival, it was determined that the victim, 51-year-old Henry D. Cooper of Crockett, Texas, was deceased as a result of being accidentally struck by a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. At this time, the investigation is still ongoing.

HPD Ladies Wear Red

Several employees of the Hattiesburg Police Department showed their support to help fight against the number one killer of women in America, heart disease.  "National Wear Red Day" was held on February 4, 2011 and the day was set aside to encourage women nationwide to wear the color red as a way to symbolize their support in fighting heart disease.


Fifteen New Officers Welcomed By HPD

Fifteen New Faces Join Police Force

Hattiesburg, MS ∙ January 31, 2011 

 

 

With standing room only, fifteen new laterals were sworn in by Mayor Johnny Dupree on Monday morning, January 31, 2011 at City Hall. Amongst the laterals, which include thirteen men and two women, is the son of a current lieutenant of the Hattiesburg Police Department.

 

After spending three weeks reviewing departmental policies and procedures at the HPD Training Academy, the officers will then be placed on patrol where they will go through a field officer training program.
