HPD Honors Its Dispatchers

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

observed by Hattiesburg Police

For Immediate Release

Hattiesburg, MS ∙ April 11, 2011

When people need help and dial 911, they expect to receive immediate assistance from the person on the other end of the line, the dispatcher. They, telecommunicators, are projected to make the correct decisions within a few seconds and are also challenged to remain calm while handling intense calls. In addition, dispatchers often remain nameless and faceless to callers and are considered the heart of any agency.  For their dedication, the Hattiesburg Police Department will take time to honor its own dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which is set for April 10-16, 2011.

On Thursday, April 14, 2011, the fifteen dispatchers and their division manager, along with two of the agency’s teleservice employees will be given an appreciation luncheon at 11:45am at the police department.

“In emergency situations, many people don’t realize just how important dispatchers are. They work under a lot of pressure, receiving hectic calls and helping to save countless lives, so for their hard work, we salute them.  We are thankful for what they do each time they answer a 911 call,” said Major Billy Lane, the overseer of the department’s Direct Support Bureau.

*Has a dispatcher impacted your life in an emergency situation? If so, let us know! Call 601-408-2206 or write to the Hattiesburg Police Department C/O LaKeisha Bryant #1 Government Plaza Hattiesburg, MS 39401.
