Major Billy Lane began his law enforcement career at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS where he worked for five years. For over twenty-plus years, he has been employed by the Hattiesburg Police Department. During his career, he has been assigned in the patrol and traffic divisions where he was one of four officers that began the department’s first DUI Unit, served on the tactical team and was selected as Officer of the Year. He has taken command roles as a Sergeant (Traffic), Lieutenant (Accreditation), and Captain (Patrol) and is a graduate of the 2nd session of Mississippi Command College.
In his current duty assignment, Major Lane oversees the management and operations of Support Services, the Hattiesburg Police Training Academy, Dispatch Center, Accreditation and Animal Control. He is also a team leader for the law enforcement component of a multicounty Multi-Hazard Regional Response Team.
Major Lane has been involved in the accreditation process as the department’s first Accreditation Manager in their initial accreditation in 1998. He has had an active role in the process since and has continually assisted other agencies in their efforts to become accredited. He has played a key role in the State of Mississippi’s efforts to establish an Alliance Program through the Commission on Accreditation for law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Billy has served as an assessor for CALEA since 2005 and has been an Assessment Team Leader since 2008.
