2012 Olympic Track & Field Gold Medalist Bianca Knight
to Help Spearhead 2012 Healthy Hometown Celebration on Oct. 20

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg will celebrate its annual Healthy Hometown event on Sat., Oct. 20 at Town Square Park at 11 a.m., immediately after the University of Southern Mississippi’s homecoming parade. Town Square Park is located on the corner of Buschman and North Main Streets.
2012 Olympic Track and Field Gold Medalist Bianca Knight will be one of many featured guests of the health fest which is promising to provide a slew of memorable moments including a touching tribute to the late City of Hattiesburg Director of Federal and State Programs, Franklyn Tate, who was known for his relentless dedication to staying fit.

During the event, participants will have an opportunity to win treadmills, stationary bikes, bicycles, gym memberships, Southern Miss homecoming tickets, and much more. The crowd will also be dazzled by national acclaimed gymnasts from Jump In’ Gymnastics who will showcase their talent on the balance beam, the volt, and floor exercises. Tiger-Rock Martial Arts Academy plans to show why it’s considered a premiere martial-arts franchise.

The crowd will get a chance to take part in their share of challenges during other exhibitions which will include dance, aerobics, Zumba and a new form of exercise called Kukuwa. The smallest of the attendees will not be left out as they too will have opportunities to work their muscles as they participate in events such as the trike-a-thon and jump-a-thon.

Included in the mix will be three area chefs competing for gold in a cook-off inspired by the reality television show, “Chopped.”  The judges will include WDAM Meteorologist Rex Thompson.

City Planners Invite You to Share Ideas on Land Development Regulations

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg is rolling full steam ahead in its mission to significantly enhance the area’s prosperity and livability, and would love for you to come onboard. The City's Urban Development department invites residents to learn more about the Full Steam Ahead-Updating the City's Land Development Code project during a series of meetings slated to begin Thursday, Oct. 11 through Saturday, Oct. 13.

Adopted in December 2008, the City’s 2008-2028 Comprehensive Plan seeks to improve the area through mixed-use development, the addition of biking and pedestrian friendly streets, and the reduction of visual clutter.

"A comprehensive update or rewrite of the Land Development Code only comes around every 20 years or so," said Urban Development Director Pattie Brantley. "Today's citizens have the unique opportunity to provide input into the future land development regulations for their neighborhoods, business corridors and overall community."

City Engages Community on Brownfields Grant Application

Mayor Johnny L. DuPree, Ph.D.

Press Release
Monday, Sept. 10, 2012,
For Immediate Release:

City Seeks Community Feedback on Brownfields Grant Application

Hattiesburg-The City of Hattiesburg is soliciting comments from residents through October 16 concerning its bid for an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 grant.

The grant would fund the cleanup of city-owned property located in the East Jerusalem community bounded to the south by Curry St., north by Gordon’s Creek and the Leaf River to the east. Geographic coordinates for the site are: Latitude: 31º19’53.06” N; Longitude: 89º16’34.82” W.  The property was deemed eligible for federal EPA cleanup dollars following a Phase I and Phase II environmental assessment afforded by an EPA Brownfields Coalition grant.

The environmental concerns with the site are directly related to the City’s plans for reuse of the site. The City currently owns approximately 250 acres of riverfront property including the subject site.  North of the site and north of Gordon’s Creek, the City has developed a public park known as Chain Park. It is the City’s desire to redevelop the entire riverfront area as public recreation and green space in a manner consistent with Chain Park.

Click here to view a copy of the proposed application. The application may also be viewed at the Library of Hattiesburg Forrest County computer lab through assistance from the reference desk. A draft will also be available for public viewing at the City Clerk’s counter on the second floor of City Hall. Comments can be submitted during the City Council Public Meeting at 4 p.m., on Oct. 1, or to the Office of the Grant Coordinator at 601.554.1014 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
