Hattiesburg- Preparations for the City of Hattiesburg's 2013 National Night Out Against Crime event are underway. This year's theme: Hattiesburg: Encouraging and Supporting Our Youth – Today’s Learners...Tomorrow’s Leaders (HPSDTM).  Three students from the Hattiesburg Public School District will be honored during the National Night Out (NNO) celebration. The kick-off will be held Thursday, Aug. 1 at 5:30 p.m., with a rally on the steps of City Hall followed by a march to Town Square Park. There, participants will enjoy an evening of doorbusters, Contests, great food, educational exhibitors, health screenings, plus opportunities to learn more about National Night Out (NNO) -a nationwide crime, drug and violence prevention program. Download Flyer

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch  and TARGET, and locally by the City of Hattiesburg and Forrest County, NNO  provides a unique opportunity for the City to join forces with thousands of other communities across the country in promoting crime prevention efforts. Police-community partnerships, neighborhood safety, awareness and cooperation are important themes of NNO.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., celebrations will take place across the nation in honor of "America's Night Out." This is a time when businesses and residents partner to host memorable, block-parties and activities within their communities to foster neighbor-to-neighbor relationships, which have proven to reduce the crime rate. To Register your NNO event, please contact 601.554.1005.

Storm Debris Removal Deadline Extended

Storm Debris Removal Deadline Extended

Hattiesburg-City of Hattiesburg residents impacted by the February 10 tornado have an extra two weeks to get debris to the city’s right of ways for collection.

FEMA and MEMA officials approved Mayor Johnny DuPree’s request Wednesday afternoon to extend the deadline from April 15 to April 29.  “However, I urge residents to remain vigilant in helping us in our mission to run a smooth and timely operation,” said DuPree. “Please do not become complacent as it could prove costly for you and the City.”

Crews will continue to gather construction debris on Mondays and Wednesdays, and vegetative debris on Fridays and Saturdays.  Residents should continue to separate debris properly and avoid covering water or gas meters.

Federal Disaster Aid: How to Apply

 Forrest and Lamar Counties to Receive Federal Assistance

Hattiesburg-Forrest and Lamar counties have been declared Federal Disaster Areas due to the severe storms and tornadoes which moved through those counties on February 10.
 
“Tuesday I requested an Expedited Disaster Declaration from the White House in order to speed recovery to those hit hardest by these tornadoes,” Gov. Phil Bryant said during Wednesday’s announcement. “I appreciate their quick response which will ensure we are able to provide critical resources as these residents and communities begin the difficult process of recovery.”

Approved in this disaster declaration are:

• Individual Assistance- Grants to individuals and households.
• Public Assistance:
 Category A- Debris removal.
 Category B- Emergency Protective Measures.
• Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, this program provides grants for actions that reduce the risk to life and property from natural hazards.

Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment Teams made up of MEMA, FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration and local officials are surveying additional damages in other counties to be considered for additional federal disaster assistance. 

Anyone with damages in these counties may apply by going to www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The speech or hearing impaired may call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.
What Information Do I Need to Apply?

Whether applying online at www.disasterassistance.gov from your computer or smartphone, or over the phone through a FEMA call center, you should have a pen and paper and the following information:

• Your Social Security number
• Current and pre-disaster address
• A telephone number where you can be contacted
• Insurance information
• Total household annual income
• A routing and account number from your bank (only necessary if you want to have disaster assistance funds transferred directly into your bank account) Lookup your bank routing number.
• A description of your losses that were caused by the disaster

After you've completed your application for assistance, you will receive a FEMA application number. Write down this number and keep it for future reference.
